| Summer Student Report 2007 Once again, summer is done and in the OCCID office we were as busy as ever – sharing information across Ontario to prevent impaired driving. Listed below is a review and summary of some of the events that we attended over the past few months. This year, there were a total of twelve summer students working in the OCCID office and attending different events across Ontario. May 1st/2nd – volunteered with “In the Drivers Seat” judging May 15th – Launch Event at Toronto Police Services Marine Unit – a joint effort with the Canadian Safe Boating Council and Toronto Police Services and the arrive alive DRIVE SOBER campaign. A well attended event … May 18th – HWY 400 display with Ontario Provincial Police May 23rd – Display at Loretto College May 23rd – Display at Kraft Canada – Employee Wellness Day May 26th – Golf Tournament – Welland Multicultural group used OCCID materials June 8th – Drive

Meeting - Downtown office June 11th – Launch for the neighbours night out with Crime Prevention Association Toronto June 13th – Golden Helmets OPP Launch at the Harley Davidson Vaughan - Deeley Harley Davidson welcomed the precision driving team and the OPP to their Vaughan location for the Drive Safe launch. We were also joined by the Minister of community safety and correctional services, Monty Kwinter as he presented the driving team. Other media attendees included Global and CTV News. Some of OCCID’s summer students got a chance to meet both the Minister and Tom Brown at this event, which was an wonderful experience! June 19th – Drive Safe golf tournament in Ajax at the Whitevale Golf Club - A few of the summer students attended this event to help out with the silent auction that took place after the golf tournament. Overall, it was a really successful event minus the intense thunderstorms that we were hit by that day. June 19th – Brampton

Golf tournament at the Castlemore Golf and Country Club June 22nd – CHAY Day Safety Clinic at Vaughan Mills Nascar Speed park It was a very windy day when OCCID attended the CHAY Radio Safety clinic at the Vaughan Mills nascar Speedpark. The putting game was set up for kids to try out when they came for go-karting at the park. Members of the OPP were also present - checking for seatbelt and child car seat safety. June 27th – OCCID’s
13th annual Drive Straight Golf tournament at Mandarin Golf Club
in Markham June 29th – Hwy 400 for the Canada Day long weekend - Students took part in the second long weekend R.I.D.E Spot Check of the summer and handed out approximately 2400 insurance folders and passports to safety to the drivers on hwy400 during the early morning rush hour! (6am-12pm). July 1st – shared materials with Mississauga Safety Day July 1st – Canada Day at Downsview Park OCCID celebrated Canada Day at Downsview Park in North York and shared lots of information on safe and sober driving with the hundreds of people who attended throughout the long day. We handed out insurance folders, passports to safety, and tattoos, sold T-shirts, and more. July 6th-8th – Steelback Grand Prix of Toronto What used to be known as the Molson Indy-now the Steelback Grand Prix is a 3-day event at Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto. This year, OCCID brought out the putting game which was a big hit with people of all ages at the Indy, as well T-shirts, postcards, key-tainers, and passports to safety along with our safe driving quiz, were all a part of the 3days of educating race fans! July 9-11th – Niagara Stop Drunk Driving Silent Auction in St. Catharines – OCCID helped this group to set up a silent auction on behalf of Niagara Stop Drunk Driving at Fairview Mall in St.Catharines. The display included many gift certificates that were donated for the auction as well as a cake that was donated by Zehr’s grocery store and our information on safe driving with postcards, insurance folders, T-shirts and passports to safety. July 12th – arrive alive DRIVE SOBER day with Toronto Argonauts game at Rogers Centre. Once again, OCCID took part in distributing information about safe and sober driving to football fans at Rogers Center. We handed out approximately 4000 insurance folders before and after the game. We also had a small display setup with the OPP outside gate 5 which included a R.I.D.E truck, where fans got the chance to take a look inside the truck. A Toronto Police Constable sang the anthem. July 17th – Toronto Police Services We walked through the R.I.D.E. truck and reviewed the purpose of the materials in the truck. We then continued inside T.P.S. and Constable Lee Bishop walked us through the process of bringing an impaired driver into the station including a trip to the holding cells. All of us were able to check out the roadside screening device and the breathalyzer. We tested them using mouthwash comparing the alcohol content to that of a normal breath sample. July 17th – In the afternoon we attended the offices of Student Life Education Company to “focus test” some resources for them. July 18th – Flyer Leaside The summer student’s flyered portions of Leaside and North Toronto in order to inform the neighbourhood about our new money making incentive "Your Empties Please". We sent out six student for approximately one week of flyering. The following Monday's until August 7th, two students used the OCCID van to collect empties and return them at the Beer Store. (Michael has written a report on this which is on Anne's Computer) July 20th – Andrew Trudeau Golf Tournament We used the OCCID van to drive to the Loyalist Golf and Country Club in Kingston. We brought materials to host a putting game including impairment goggles, passports to safety, and insurance folders to give out. July 20th – Toronto Police R.I.D.E Spot check The students were able to see the R.I.D.E. spot check truck in person and help police to screen drivers. The materials brought included approximately 1,600 passports to safety. They handed materials out to the cars that were stopped to be checked. July 25th – SLEC Golf Tournament in Kleinburg - CHMA presented a charity golf tournament at the Hunter Glen Golf Club in Kleinburg. OCCID Summer students worked with The Student Life Education Company and included our putting game, poker games and mocktails. July 26th – 29th - Wakestock July 30th – Herbert Carnegie Golf Tournament A few OCCID summer students attended this golf tournament at the Carrying Place Golf & Country Club for the Herbert Carnegie Golf tournament. At this golf tournament we brought a foursome prize as well as the drive straight prize. We spotted the Straightest Drive hole and gave out mocktails as well as 100+ golfer goodie bags which contained passports, golf tees, etc. August 2nd - TTC Day - Almost 10,000 passports were distributed throughout the day at Yonge/Bloor station located at the staircases leading to the Bloor trains on both platforms. The first shift starting at 7:00 am until 8:30 and the afternoon shift 3:00 until 4:30. August 3rd - HWY 400 – This was the third long weekend of the summer and OCCID continued to provide awareness about safe driving. It was attended by the media and the OPP. The summer students brought passports to distribute as well as keytainers and t-shirts were brought and sold. August 9th – Joe Dickson The 14th annual Ajax-Pickering-Whitby-Oshawa charity golf tournament was held at the Deer Creek golf and banquet facility in Ajax. Some items that OCCID distributed at this event included boating information, golfer goodie packages and our impaired goggle putting game. August 9th – 12th – Toronto Festival of Beer OCCID attended the 13th annual Toronto Festival of Beer this summer and most of the summer students took part in this event. We had a large display set up for 4 days this year and we also sold bottled water to the public over this very hot weekend. We also had a 50/50 draw and sold tickets for three days to the thousands of attendees at the festival. Other supplies that we brought included T-shirts, postcards, key-tainers, passports to safety, and insurance folders August 14th – Blue Jays Day at the Skydome During this years Blue jays game we handed out approximately 5000 insurance folders and passports to safety outside the gates of the Skydome both before and after the game. We also had a small display with Toronto Police inside the Dome at the 100 level seating. Other items that were brought to this event included, posters and postcards. August 20th – Station Creek Golf Tournament - This was the last golf tournament for the summer for OCCID and a few of our summer students attended in Richmond Hill/Newmarket. Some of the items that we took to this event were golfer goodie bags, our impaired vision goggles, mocktails, T-shirts, and of course, a foursome prize. August 22nd – Toronto City Hall – attended and participated with the DUMB Car – the day was sponsored by Insurance Bureau of Canada. August 21st, 23rd, 27th – helped prepare materials for National Students Against Impaired and Distracted Driving Day in the home office of Student Life Education Company. August 31st - HWY 400 – This was the second long weekend of the summer and OCCID continued to provide awareness about safe driving. It was attended by the media and the OPP. The summer students brought passports to distribute as well as keytainers and t-shirts were brought and sold.
